Front Fairing Windwrap  XT und GX Fairings

About Windwrap

Developing a high quality, transparent front fairing for recumbent bicycles and tricycles is a major challenge. Fairings of simpler manufacture are being made by deep- drawing. This process creates streaks which result in a bad and often distorted vision through the fairing, and an overall unsatisfactory surface finish. Mostly the material is drawn upon a die with rather a coarse surface in order to conceal faulty manufacture.

This motivated recumbent enthusiasts Mark and Carl Mueller to develop a manufacturing process of their own with the aim of producing crystal- clear, bubble- free, smooth front fairings. Over the course of several years, and besides their daytime jobs, the two brothers devoted a considerable amount of patience, time and legwork to making their fairings production ready. That´s true enthusiasm for you.

The mounts and brackets for the entire product range have been made and supplied by Terracycle right from the start. When growing demand required more time and resources than Carl and Mark Mueller had originally intended to invest, they eventually handed the entire production of their Lexan Polycarbonate fairings over to Terracycle.

As the exclusive European importer and distributor we proudly include the Windwrap fairings in our product range

Advantages of a Front Fairing

In the cold season a front fairing protects your feet from the cold wind whereas in summer it compensates temperature differences while going uphill or downhill, thus sparing you the fuss of pulling additional clothing on and off. A front fairing protects the rider'ss feet, legs and crotch from rain and snow, and one has to carry less rain gear. The fairing is easily detachable if so required, needs little maintenance if any, and is sturdy and durable.

Why choose a Windwrap Fairing?

The windwrap fairings, thanks to the properties of Lexan polycarbonate, are very hard-wearing and sturdy (just like the helmet visors of the Apollo astronauts, which were made of Lexan as well). They perfectly enclose the legs thanks to their conforming shape. An even material thickness makes for overall rigidity. The fairing surface is extremely smooth and next to bubble free providing you with optical clarity and next to zero distortion. For storage the fairing can be easily rolled up. The fairings feature vibration damping rubber mounts that keep your ride smooth and rattle free and with their variable mounting hardware can be adjusted to most recumbent bicycles and tricycles in the market.

Rear Fairing

For most of us who ride in traffic it becomes a necessity to do everything we can to be seen by motorists. Since almost all recumbents sit lower to the ground than diamond frame bikes anything we can do to alert others to our presence is valuable.

The original reason for creating this product was to duplicate the aerodynamic efficiency of hard tail fairings long used by recumbent racers all over the world. TerraCycle has created a highly visible and portable version of these rear Fairings that allows you to be more visible during the day and night while riding faster or with less effort at the same speed.

On tests with a variety of bikes, speed increases between 2 and 6 km/h were not uncommon. You can generally expect a 5 to 7 percent increase in speed. For riders hoping to get the most aerodynamic benefit out of their bikes, this is not insignificant. For long distance touring, this adds up to more miles every day or easier miles on the road, not to mention the huge margin of safety you afford yourself while sharing the road with vehicles. Some recumbents and their riders will notice larger gains, others less, but everyone will see a benefit.

The rear soft Fairing kits consist of a multi-adjustable alloy frame that is easily attached to the bike with cleverly designed brackets that allow the frame to be removed or attached- in less than a minute. A stretchy Lycra cover fits over your seat and then back over the frame. A tailight fitting (included) allows you attach a rear tailight outside the cover as well as an internal light for illuminating the Lycra cover.

The Lycra covers come in a variety of colors. For commuters and riders that really want to be seen we recommend the neon orange or neon yellow. Both are highly visible during the day, and when illuminated from inside with the internal light option, will make your bike stand out dramatically for night time riding. All Lycra covers come with a section of reflective black Lycra for additional night time visibility.

There is now a version of the soft rear Fairing specifically for Trikes. Although it is optimized for Catrike, Greenspeed, WizWheelz, and ICE  trikes, the adjustability of the frame allows it to fit other similarly configured trikes with mesh seats. A rear Fairing is one of the best safety and performance upgrades you can make to your bike.
