TerraCycle Idler Kit Trice

"These sets of idlers make less noise then the original one.

It’s diffecult to prove that I ride faster now (lack of practise), but it feels certainly easier. It is now easy to keep the cadence above the 100~105 rpm, because that is what I like the most.

High cadence and the big chainhweels means high chainspeed. High chain speed in combination with chain tubes means high lost of power by chain tube friction ( P_lost [W] = Fw [N] * v_chain [m/s], chain tube friction Fw depends on deformation and material of chain tube).

The rear fender is now removed (I’ am a nice weather rider) and will be modified so the chain will not tough it.

I am pleased with the solution" [...]

TerraCycle Idler Kit Trice power/return

"...I fitted the idler to my Q. It only took about 15 minutes to do. I have kept a small length of tube, 25mm, on the return side, so as to support the chain. It uses the same strap as the original.

I tested it today, just over a 15 mile ride. The best thing about the idler is it is so quiet. In fact the drive train is as quiet as a DF bike. ( road bike )

On my Trice I have the Q rings. With the tubes the chain whips about a lot as it enters and exits the chain ring, now it is very smooth. This I believe is due to there being less weight in the drive train to move about

The only negatives are that I get a bit of oil from the chain onto my right leg. There is also a possibility that the power side of the chain will rub on the suspension pivot joint when it on the lowest gear at the back.

I do not think it makes any difference to the speed. The main plus is a great improvement in the how smooth and quiet the drive train is. This is just what I wanted it to do. Also it is so well made..."

TerraCycle Idler Kit Trice

"I now have more than enough kilometers on the TerraCycle idlers to be able to say, categorically, that they well worth the purchase price. The chain line is cleaner, quieter, feels more free and I was able to get rid of all the chain tubes. An unexpected bonus is that when I am cleaning/lubricating the chain I can now spin the pedals backwards without the chain coming off the sprockets, which it often used to do with the original set-up."

TerraCycle Power Idler 14 tooth for Quest

"The 14 T power side idler I bought to use in my Quest velomobile, fits perfectly. All I had to do was remove the old idler, remove the axle from it and use it again in the Terracycle idler, and just bolt it back in! Well, nearly. To be honest, I added a very thin washer to the axle end because the new idler is about half a mill narrower then the original one. But that's all... It's also the perfect size, a larger one would probably not have fitted although I don't know the dimensions of the 15T one. Clearance underneath this one in my quest is a bit over one millimeter... Good enough for me.

Now, for you to advice other customers it's good to know that there are 2 versions of the quest. The older model uses 20 inch rear wheel, a mid axle and a whole bunch of idlers and tensioners, of which I don't know very much about. The later model, like mine, uses a 26 inch rear wheel and just one power side idler. My first ride with it went great. The drivetrain felt a lot more direct, very noticable during acceleration. I don't know if it actually did make the velomobile faster, but it felt like it anyway..."
